What Leonida is
Leonida is the fictional US state where Grand Theft Auto VI takes place. It is Rockstar's take on Florida, the same way Liberty City stands in for New York and San Andreas for California. GTA VI is the first game in the series set across an entire state rather than a city and its outskirts.
Rockstar's official materials describe a state of sun, swamp and coastline: neon metropolis on one edge, wetlands and small towns everywhere else.
Every confirmed region
- Vice City: the Miami-inspired metropolis and the game's core
- Leonida Keys: a southern island chain of bridges, marinas and smuggling history
- Grassrivers: protected wetlands, Rockstar's Everglades
- Port Gellhorn: a faded port town on the gulf side
- Ambrosia: inland, industrial-agricultural territory
- Mount Kalaga: forested ridge country in the state's north
Why the name
Juan Ponce de Leon is the Spanish explorer tied to Florida's founding myth, and Leonida reads as a nod to that history. Rockstar has not commented on the etymology.
