How to Make Room for GTA 6: Free Up 212GB on PS5 and Xbox

GTA 6 needs up to 212GB and pre-load opens on November 10. How much free space each console really has, the fastest ways to clear room without losing games, and which SSD or expansion card to buy if you need more.

Rockstar has confirmed that GTA 6 needs up to 212GB of storage, and digital pre-load opens on November 10. On a launch PS5 or an Xbox Series S, that is a third or more of all the space you have. This guide shows how much room you actually have, how to clear it without losing anything, and what to buy if clearing is not enough.

For the background on the file size itself, download times and the map, see our full GTA 6 size guide.

The short answer

  • Aim for 250GB free before November 10: 212GB for the game plus room for a day-one patch
  • Move, do not delete. Both consoles can park games on a cheap USB drive and copy them back later, much faster than downloading again
  • GTA 6 cannot run from a USB drive on either console. It must sit on the internal SSD, a PS5 M.2 SSD or an Xbox expansion card
  • If you need more space: a PCIe Gen4 M.2 SSD for PS5, or a Seagate or WD_Black expansion card for Xbox Series X|S

How much space does your console really have?

Console storage is always smaller than the number on the box, because the system software takes a share. These are the approximate usable figures for each model.

ConsoleAdvertisedUsable (approx.)Room left after GTA 6
PS5 (2020 launch model)825GB667GBAbout 455GB
PS5 Slim1TB848GBAbout 636GB
PS5 Pro2TB1.86TBAbout 1.6TB
Xbox Series X1TB802GBAbout 590GB
Xbox Series S512GB364GBAbout 152GB
Xbox Series S1TBAbout 800GBAbout 590GB

Step 1: check what is taking up space

  • PS5: Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps. Sort by size
  • Xbox: My games & apps > See all > Manage > Storage devices, or press the Menu button on a game and choose Manage game and add-ons to see its size
  • Look for the usual giants first: Call of Duty can pass 200GB with every mode installed, and games like Ark, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Microsoft Flight Simulator are all big
  • Captures add up too. On PS5, check Media Gallery, and turn off automatic trophy video captures if you never watch them

Step 2: move games to a USB drive instead of deleting them

Any USB 3 external hard drive or SSD of 250GB or more works as a parking space. You cannot play PS5 or Xbox Series X|S games from it, but you can store them there and copy them back in minutes, which beats a 100GB download.

  • PS5: plug the drive into a rear USB port, format it as USB extended storage under Settings > Storage, then select games and choose Move to USB extended storage. PS4 games can even be played straight from the USB drive
  • Xbox: plug in the drive and format it for games when asked. Then open a game's Manage menu and choose Move or copy. Xbox One and older backward-compatible games can run straight from it
  • Formatting erases the drive, so use an empty one

Step 3: trim what you keep

  • Uninstall unused modes. Call of Duty and some other games let you remove campaign, multiplayer or Warzone packs one by one. On Xbox use Manage game and add-ons, on PS5 use the game's Manage Game Content menu
  • Delete old saves only if they are backed up. PS Plus cloud saves and Xbox cloud saves are automatic for most games
  • Clear media. Move videos and screenshots to a USB stick or your phone app, then delete them from the console

Step 4: if you still need space, add a fast drive

If you play a lot of big games, clearing space now just pushes the problem back. Adding fast storage solves it for good, and GTA 6 runs from it exactly as it would from the built-in drive.

  • Fitting an M.2 drive in a PS5 takes about ten minutes and a small Phillips screwdriver. The console formats it on first boot
  • To install GTA 6 on the new drive, set Settings > Storage > Installation Location > PS5 games to the M.2 SSD before pre-load starts
  • Xbox expansion cards cost more per gigabyte but simply slot into the back of the console
ConsoleWhat to buyKey requirement
PS5, PS5 Slim, PS5 ProM.2 NVMe SSD, 1TB or 2TBPCIe Gen4, 5,500MB/s read recommended, heatsink under 11.25mm total height
Xbox Series X|SSeagate Storage Expansion Card or WD_Black C50Must be an official Xbox expansion card. Ordinary M.2 drives do not fit

Before November 10: a quick checklist

  • Free at least 250GB on the drive GTA 6 will go to
  • Turn on automatic downloads and leave the console in rest mode (PS5) or with Sleep power mode and updates on (Xbox)
  • Check your internet plan: 212GB takes about 4 hours 45 minutes at 100Mbps
  • Physical edition? It contains a download code, so you need exactly the same space

FAQ

How much space do I need for GTA 6?

Rockstar says up to 212GB. Clear about 250GB so there is room for a day-one patch.

Can I play GTA 6 from an external hard drive?

No. On both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, current-generation games must run from the internal SSD, a PS5 M.2 SSD or an Xbox expansion card. A USB drive can only store the game.

Will GTA 6 fit on an Xbox Series S?

Yes. The 512GB Series S has about 364GB usable, so GTA 6 fits with roughly 150GB to spare, but you may need to move other games off first.

What SSD do I need for GTA 6 on PS5?

Any M.2 NVMe SSD that meets Sony's PS5 requirements: PCIe Gen4, with about 5,500MB/s read speed recommended, and a heatsink no taller than 11.25mm in total.
