GTA 6 Size: File Size in GB, Storage You Need and Map Size

GTA 6 is reportedly 210GB on PS5, which would make it one of the biggest console installs ever. Here is what is reported and what is confirmed, how much space to clear on each console, download times and how Leonida's map compares to GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2.

By · · 11 min read

There are two questions behind every search for GTA 6 size. The first is practical: how many gigabytes will Grand Theft Auto VI take up on my console, and do I have room for it? The second is about the game itself: how big is the map, and how does Leonida compare to Los Santos and the frontier of Red Dead Redemption 2?

This guide answers both. It separates what Rockstar has confirmed from what has been reported or estimated, and it gives you a clear plan for clearing space before pre-load opens on November 12, 2026, one week before the game launches on November 19.

The short answer

  • PS5 file size: about 210GB, reported on October 27, 2026 by the PlayStation Game Size account on X and corroborated by Insider Gaming. Rockstar and Sony have not confirmed it
  • Xbox Series X and Series S file size: not reported yet, officially or otherwise
  • Space to clear: at least 250GB on any console, to cover the base game, a possible day-one patch and room for the console to unpack the download
  • Pre-load: opens November 12, 2026 for digital pre-orders and for physical buyers who redeem the code in the box
  • Map size: Rockstar says Leonida is about twice the size of GTA V's map and about three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2. No official square-mileage figure exists

How big is the GTA 6 file size?

On October 27, 2026, the X account PlayStation Game Size, which tracks install sizes from Sony's servers and has a good record with pre-release listings, reported that GTA 6 will need roughly 210GB on PlayStation 5. Insider Gaming reported the same figure shortly afterwards, and outlets including Kotaku and Game Rant picked it up the same day.

That number has not been confirmed by Rockstar or Sony. At the time of writing the PlayStation Store listing still does not show a public storage requirement. Real sizes usually appear on store pages when pre-load goes live, so expect the official figure on or just before November 12.

Treat 210GB as the best available number rather than a promise. Final install sizes often shift by a few gigabytes between a store listing and launch day, and a day-one patch can add more on top. It is also very different from earlier estimates. Before this report, most outlets, including this site, were working from guesses of around 120 to 130GB. If the 210GB figure holds, those guesses were far too low.

GTA 6 file size by platform

On Xbox, games can ship with lower-resolution assets for the Series S, which sometimes makes the Series S install smaller than the Series X one. Rockstar has not said whether GTA 6 does this, so plan as if the Xbox versions will be about the same size as the PS5 version until the Microsoft Store shows a real number.

PlatformReported sizeStatus
PlayStation 5About 210GBReported October 27 by PlayStation Game Size, corroborated by Insider Gaming. Not confirmed
PlayStation 5 ProSame download as PS5Pro Enhanced titles use one package; no separate size reported
Xbox Series XNot reportedNo figure has surfaced
Xbox Series SNot reportedSeries S installs are sometimes smaller, but nothing is known for GTA 6
PCNot applicableNo PC version has been announced for launch

Fake GTA 6 file sizes to ignore

GTA 6 has attracted more fake file sizes than almost any game. Over the last year viral posts have claimed sizes of 676GB and 750GB, often with made-up screenshots of store pages. None of them came from Rockstar, Sony or Microsoft, and none match what store backends show.

Be just as wary of anything offering a GTA 6 download outside the PlayStation Store, the Microsoft Store or a code from a physical box. GTA 6 is not on PC, and any site offering a GTA 6 ISO, APK or early PC download is a scam or malware.

Why is GTA 6 so big?

Rockstar has not explained what takes up the space, but the size fits what the studio has shown. A few things are almost certainly behind it.

  • The map. Leonida is Rockstar's largest world, roughly double GTA V, and Rockstar's Aaron Garbut has stressed that it is denser and has far more enterable interiors than any previous Rockstar game
  • Detail per square foot. The trailers show crowded beaches, packed highways, swamp foliage, local weather, puddles that stay after rain and a wind system that moves hair, debris and grass. High-resolution textures and geometry for all of it add up fast
  • Wildlife. Rockstar says there are more than 170 animal species in Leonida, each with its own models and animations
  • Audio. GTA games carry hours of licensed music across many radio stations, plus thousands of lines of dialogue for the story, the two leads Jason and Lucia, and the ambient chatter of Leonida's population
  • Cutscenes and story. A long, two-protagonist story built on motion capture brings a large amount of animation data

How GTA 6 compares to other big games

A 210GB install would put GTA 6 near the top of the console charts. For context, GTA V on PS5 and Xbox Series X is roughly 110GB in total, and Red Dead Redemption 2 was more than 100GB when it launched on PS4 and Xbox One in 2018. Rockstar's games have grown with every generation, and GTA 6 looks like the biggest jump yet.

How much storage do you need on each console?

The size of a game is not the same as the space you need for it. Consoles need room to download and unpack data, a day-one patch may add more, and you probably want to keep at least one other game installed. That is why we recommend clearing at least 250GB before November 12, and more if you can.

Here is how a 210GB install fits on each console's internal storage. Usable space is what is left after the system software takes its share.

Playing on Xbox Series S? Read this

The 512GB Xbox Series S is the console most affected by GTA 6's size. With only about 364GB of usable space, a 210GB install would take up close to two-thirds of the drive once you add a patch and other system data. That leaves room for maybe one other large game.

If GTA 6 is going to be your main game, that may be fine: uninstall everything else, keep GTA 6 and one or two smaller titles, and re-download older games when you want them. If you regularly rotate between several big games, an expansion card is worth budgeting for. See our PS5 vs Xbox guide for more on how the Series S version compares.

How to free up space before pre-load

  • Check what you have. On PS5, go to Settings, Storage, Console Storage. On Xbox, press the Xbox button and open My games and apps, Manage, Storage devices
  • Delete games you have finished or are not playing. Your saves are kept on the console and in the cloud if you have PlayStation Plus or Xbox cloud saves, and you can re-download games you own at any time
  • Clear captures. Video clips and screenshots can take tens of gigabytes; back up the ones you want to a USB drive or your phone app first
  • Remove optional content. Some games, such as Call of Duty titles, let you uninstall individual modes or high-resolution packs without deleting the whole game
  • Move older games to a USB drive. PS4 games can play from USB extended storage, and PS5 and Xbox Series games can be stored there and moved back when needed, which is faster than re-downloading
  • Aim for at least 250GB free by November 11 so pre-load can start the moment it opens

Expanding your storage

If deleting games is not enough, both consoles can add fast storage. GTA 6, like other current-generation games, will need to run from fast internal storage, not from a standard USB drive.

  • PS5: every PS5 model has an M.2 expansion slot. Sony recommends a PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD with read speeds of 5,500MB/s or more, ideally with a heatsink. A 1TB or 2TB drive is the sweet spot for most players. You can play GTA 6 directly from it
  • Xbox Series X and Series S: use an official Storage Expansion Card, made by Seagate and Western Digital, which plugs into the back of the console. Games run from it exactly as they do from internal storage
  • USB drives: fine for storing games you are not playing, but PS5 and Xbox Series games, including GTA 6, cannot be played from them

How long will GTA 6 take to download?

At 210GB, download time depends almost entirely on your connection. The table below shows best-case times at a steady speed. In practice launch week will be slower, because millions of people will be downloading at once and PlayStation and Xbox servers will be under heavy load.

Connection speedBest-case time for 210GB
25MbpsAbout 19 hours
50MbpsAbout 9 hours 20 minutes
100MbpsAbout 4 hours 40 minutes
300MbpsAbout 1 hour 35 minutes
1GbpsAbout 30 minutes, if the servers can keep up

Tips for a faster download

  • Pre-load on November 12 rather than waiting for launch night, when traffic peaks
  • Use a wired Ethernet connection if you can. It is usually faster and more stable than Wi-Fi
  • Leave your console in Rest Mode (PS5) or with standby set to keep downloading (Xbox) so the download continues overnight
  • Pause other downloads and streaming in your home while GTA 6 is downloading
  • If you are on a capped data plan, check your allowance. A 210GB download plus a patch can use a large share of a monthly cap

Physical buyers still need the full download

There is no GTA 6 disc. The physical Standard Edition, at 79.99 US dollars, contains a download code, and the Ultimate Edition, at 99.99 US dollars, is digital only. That means everyone, including physical buyers, downloads the whole game.

Physical boxes go on sale and ship from November 12, the same day pre-load opens. Redeem your code that day so your console has a full week to download. It also means a disc-less PS5 or an Xbox Series S can play the physical edition. Our launch day guide walks through pre-load step by step.

Will GTA 6 get bigger after launch?

Very likely. Rockstar has not announced a day-one patch, but most big games now ship with one, and GTA 6 is unlikely to be an exception. Rockstar has also not said when GTA Online for GTA 6 will arrive or how it will be delivered, but GTA V grew steadily over years of online updates, and a similar pattern for GTA 6 would add to the install over time.

The practical takeaway: do not plan your storage around exactly 210GB. Leave yourself 30 to 50GB of headroom beyond the base game, and expect the install to grow over the next few years.

How big is the GTA 6 map?

Now for the other kind of size. Rockstar's Aaron Garbut told Game Informer in September 2026 that Leonida is about twice the size of GTA V's map, Rockstar's largest by some distance, with more density and far more interiors. Rockstar told the New York Times the playable area is about three times that of Red Dead Redemption 2. And Rob Nelson has said Vice City alone is about twice the size of Los Santos. Our GTA 6 map size FAQ tracks every official figure.

What does twice the size of GTA V actually mean?

Rockstar has never given an official area for GTA V's map either, so any square-mileage figure for GTA 6 is fan math. Community measurements of GTA V usually land somewhere between about 30 and 50 square miles, depending on whether the surrounding ocean and the area under water are counted. Doubling that gives a rough range for Leonida, but because the starting point is itself an estimate, treat any precise number you see online with caution.

Size is also not the same as scale of play. Rockstar has been clear that it cares more about density than raw area. Vice City is a full modern city with crowded beaches, nightclubs and highways, and the rest of the map mixes small towns, wetlands, islands and forests. More interiors mean more of that space is actually usable, not just scenery you drive past.

A full map of Leonida leaked in August 2026, and many fans believe it is real. Rockstar has not released an official map, and we do not reproduce leaked material. Square-mileage claims based on it are estimates, not official numbers.

The six regions of Leonida

Leonida is Rockstar's fictional Florida, split into six official regions. Each has its own look, people and activities, and together they make up the world you will download.

RegionRockstar's taglineReal-world inspiration
Vice CityEverything in ExcessMiami
Leonida KeysGateway to ParadiseFlorida Keys
GrassriversWelcome to the WetlandsThe Everglades
Port GellhornLive HardThe Florida Panhandle
AmbrosiaKeeping Leonida SweetSugar country around Lake Okeechobee
Mount Kalaga National ParkWild, Wild CountryNorth Florida's forests and backcountry

Map size in practice: water, wildlife and weather

A lot of Leonida's size is water and wilderness, and Rockstar has filled it with things to do. The Leonida Keys are an archipelago of islands and bridges, Grassrivers is protected wetland best explored by airboat, and Mount Kalaga has hunting, fishing and off-road trails. Confirmed activities include scuba diving, snorkeling, cave diving, jet skiing, kayaking, base jumping and skydiving.

Weather is local rather than map-wide, so a storm can sweep over the Keys while Vice City stays sunny, and tropical storms and hurricanes are part of the game. More than 170 animal species, including over 60 kinds of bird, live across the map. For a region-by-region tour, read our full Leonida map breakdown.

What we will update at launch

This guide will change as real numbers arrive. When pre-load opens on November 12 we will add the confirmed PS5 and Xbox file sizes from the store listings, and on launch day we will add the size of any day-one patch. Once the official map is in players' hands, we will update the map section with what Leonida actually looks like. Bookmark the live countdown to keep track of launch week.

FAQ

How many GB is GTA 6?

About 210GB on PS5, according to a report from the PlayStation Game Size account on October 27, 2026, corroborated by Insider Gaming. Rockstar and Sony have not confirmed it, and no Xbox size has been reported.

How much space should I clear for GTA 6?

At least 250GB. That covers the reported 210GB install, a possible day-one patch and room for the console to unpack the download.

Will GTA 6 fit on the Xbox Series S?

Yes, but only just. The 512GB Series S has about 364GB of usable space, so a 210GB install would take up most of it. Consider a Storage Expansion Card if you play other large games.

Is GTA 6 really 676GB or 750GB?

No. Those figures are fake. The most credible report, from October 27, 2026, puts the PS5 version at about 210GB.

Can I play GTA 6 from an external hard drive?

No. GTA 6 is a PS5 and Xbox Series game, so it must run from internal storage, a PS5 M.2 SSD or an Xbox Storage Expansion Card. USB drives can store it but not play it.

Does the physical GTA 6 edition reduce the download?

No. There is no disc. The physical box contains a download code, so physical buyers download the full game too.
