No edition of GTA 6 comes with early access. The Ultimate Edition adds in-game extras, not extra days. But because the game unlocks at midnight local time in each region, some players get it much sooner than others, and the gap between the first region and the last is about 19 hours.
That has revived an old Xbox trick: telling your console it lives in New Zealand. Here is how it works, why it is far from certain for GTA 6, and what everyone else can do.
The short answer
- No official early access. Every edition unlocks on November 19 at local midnight
- New Zealand is first, at midnight NZDT, which is 11:00 UTC on November 18 and 6 AM ET
- Xbox: changing your console's location to New Zealand has unlocked other digital games early. It is not confirmed to work for GTA 6
- PS5: the trick does not work. A PS5 game is tied to the region of the account that bought it
- Pre-load first. None of this helps unless the full game is already downloaded. Pre-load opens on November 10
Why New Zealand gets GTA 6 first
The PlayStation Store lists GTA 6 as unlocking at midnight on November 19 in each store region. New Zealand is the first country to reach that midnight, then Australia, Japan and Korea, then Asia, the Middle East and Europe, and finally the Americas.
For a player on the US East Coast, that means people in Auckland will be playing from about 6 AM ET on November 18, a full 18 hours before the US unlock. Our launch day guide has the full table of unlock times by region.
How the Xbox New Zealand trick works
On Xbox, a digital game's unlock time often follows the console's location setting, not where your account was created. Players have used this for years to start big digital releases early. The steps are simple:
- Make sure GTA 6 is fully pre-loaded. Digital pre-load on Xbox opens at 12 AM GMT on November 10, which is 7 PM ET on November 9
- Shortly after midnight in New Zealand (11:00 UTC on November 18), open Settings > System > Language & location
- Set the location to New Zealand and restart the console when asked
- Launch GTA 6. If it opens, you are in. If it shows a countdown or a store page, the trick is not working for this game
- Once you are playing, you can switch the location back. Some players wait until their own unlock time to be safe
Why it might not work for GTA 6
Treat the trick as a maybe. Three things make it less certain than usual this time.
- Xbox pre-load is global. Rockstar opened Xbox pre-load at a single moment worldwide, 12 AM GMT, while PS5 pre-load follows local midnight. If Xbox unlocks the game at one global time too, there is no time zone to jump ahead to
- Rockstar can check the unlock on its side. Publishers can block a game until their own servers say it is time, whatever the console's location says
- It has been patched before. Microsoft and publishers have closed the gap for some big launches, and they know this one will draw attention
Can you do it on PS5?
Not with your main account. On PS5, a digital game belongs to the store region of the account that bought it, and changing the console's time or language does not change that. A pre-order from the US PlayStation Store unlocks at the US time.
The only route would be a separate PlayStation account set to New Zealand, with the game bought again from the New Zealand store using New Zealand payment or gift cards. That means paying for GTA 6 twice, and your saves on that account would not move to your main one. For almost everyone it is not worth it.
Is it worth the risk?
Changing your Xbox location is a normal console setting and players have not been banned for it in the past. The bigger risks are practical: a few hours of play before a day-one patch, store prices showing in New Zealand dollars until you change back, and the chance that the trick simply fails on the night. If it does, nothing is lost. Switch back and wait for your own unlock.
How to avoid GTA 6 spoilers before you can play
Whether or not you get in early, millions of people will be playing before you. A few minutes of setup helps a lot:
- Mute words on X, Threads and Bluesky: GTA 6 spoilers, Jason, Lucia, ending and the names of story characters you know
- Turn off YouTube notifications from GTA channels you do not trust, and avoid the Trending tab on launch day
- Leave Reddit and Discord GTA servers alone until you have played the first few hours
