GTA 6 Gameplay: Every Confirmed Feature, System and Mechanic
Car theft tools, a six-star wanted system, robberies that pay for the story, optional romance, gyms, refuelling, 170 animal species and more. Every GTA 6 gameplay feature Rockstar has shown or described, explained.
For years, everything we knew about how GTA 6 plays came from two cinematic trailers. That changed on August 27, 2026, when Rockstar released An Extended Look, 27 minutes of in-game footage captured on a standard PS5, alongside a round of press interviews with Rockstar North's Rob Nelson and Aaron Garbut and a Game Informer cover story a month later.
This guide collects every gameplay system described so far. Most details come from Rockstar developers speaking to outlets such as IGN, the New York Times, Kotaku, Famitsu and Game Informer rather than an official manual, and we flag anything that is still unclear.

Playing as Jason and Lucia
GTA 6 has two protagonists, but it does not work like GTA V's three-way switch. Rob Nelson told Famitsu that letting you swap freely everywhere would feel unnatural for the story. In open play you can usually switch, and the other character carries on with their own routine. IGN switched once and found Jason in the shower.
Missions vary. Some lock you to one character: a high-rise mission is set to Jason because of his Army background. Others force a swap mid-mission, such as a bank escape where you shoot as Jason and then drive as Lucia. When you play together, your partner can drive while you shoot. If one of them is arrested, it is Busted for both, even if the other escaped.

The six-star wanted system
The wanted level goes back up to six stars, and police now work from what they actually know. A crime needs a witness or a tripped alarm before it is reported. Icons under the stars show what the police know: your weapon, identity, clothing, whether Jason and Lucia were seen together, and whether CCTV caught you. You can lose them by changing clothes, switching cars or splitting up.
It is a big enough change that we wrote a dedicated guide to the GTA 6 wanted system, covering the four star states and how to escape.
Stealing cars is harder, on purpose
For the first time in the series, you cannot simply walk up to any parked car and drive away. Rockstar has built a whole loop around vehicle theft:
- Waink, a phone app, scans a car before you take it and tells you if it is locked, alarmed or fitted with a tracker, plus what a fence or Pay 'n' Spray would pay
- A slim jim opens older cars
- A key cloner is needed to start modern cars. As Nelson put it, you can smash the window and get in, but you cannot start it without one
- Some cars need tools you unlock through the story. Carjacking an occupied car still always works
- Advanced trackers alert the police if you drive too slowly, so you have to keep moving
- Damage lowers what a fence pays. Fences can also sell information, such as access codes for impound lots
- Cars you keep must be registered and garaged, and garage space is limited
Robberies and why money matters
Nelson told IGN that you can rob pretty much anything, using a headphone shop as his example. Planning matters: park a getaway car outside, look for a second exit, and expect police to surround the building if you take too long. Safes can be cracked by finding the combination, which is slower but keeps more of the loot, or blasted open, which is faster but can damage what is inside.
That matters more than in past games because, in Nelson's words, Rockstar has made money matter more in this story. Some story missions only unlock once you have enough cash, so you may need to boost cars or hit stores between big jobs. Rockstar has not said how much any mission costs.
Bigger planned jobs are led by characters such as Raul Bautista, a veteran bank robber who recruits Jason and Lucia.
The Criminal Profile
GTA 6 tracks what kind of criminal you are. The Criminal Profile pays particular attention to needless escalation and harm, changes how the world reacts to you and can influence some story moments. It has been compared to Red Dead Redemption 2's honor system, though Rockstar says it is not a direct copy.
Preview coverage from YouTuber TGG named tiers from Professional up to Psycho, plus a permanent Shattered state for players who ignore the system entirely. Rockstar has not officially detailed those tiers, so treat the specifics as preview reporting.
Combat
- Shooting limbs incapacitates enemies, and shooting a weapon can disarm them
- Certain kills trigger a cinematic slow-motion camera, similar to Red Dead Redemption 2
- Previews describe a Focus meter for slowed aiming, marking lethal zones in red and non-lethal zones in yellow
- Drawing a gun can send people running, and some civilians carry their own weapons
Romance and the relationship
Jason and Lucia's relationship is the heart of the story, but the romance itself is optional. Rockstar told TechRadar it is not something it wants to foist upon players, and it gives no specific gameplay bonus. Whatever you do, they remain partners in crime.
If you want it to flourish, you nurture it: reply to each other's texts (ignoring them may affect the relationship a bit), hold hands, kiss, hold doors, and spend quality time together on walks, kayaking trips, at the zoo or at the gym.
Body, fitness and sleep
San Andreas-style body systems are back. Overeating adds weight, the gym builds muscle and strength, and muscle fades if you stop training. Jason and Lucia can work out together.
Rest matters too. A health app on the phone says whether a character is well rested, which affects how quickly some attributes regenerate, and long stretches awake or heavy nights out show on their faces.
Rockstar also cut some realism. Nelson told Famitsu the team designed grocery shopping and fridge restocking but dropped them to find the right balance between realism and ease of play.
Refuelling
Petrol cars need fuel and electric cars need charging. At a station you choose whether to repair or refuel, and refuelling is a short quick-time interaction, estimated at around 10 seconds in previews. Nelson acknowledged it may be divisive, but argued it is so fast that players cannot complain.
The phone and social media
The phone is a physical object in the character's hand, not a screen overlay. You can scroll in-game social feeds and follow accounts, which is how you watch rising stars like the rap duo Real Dimez go viral, but you cannot post. Nelson's explanation: you are a couple on the run, so you just lurk.
Other apps include Waink for scanning cars, a health app, and Ryde Me, a rideshare app that works as fast travel.

A living world: crowds, wildlife and weather
Aaron Garbut told the New York Times that GTA 6's NPCs use more than 600,000 animations, against about 55,000 in GTA V and around 300,000 in Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar built a dedicated studio to write and animate them, and each one is individually art directed. Leonida also has a lot more enterable interiors than Los Santos.
Leonida is home to more than 170 animal species, including over 60 types of bird and over 30 land mammals, from manatees, flamingos and alligators to invasive green iguanas, cane toads and rhesus macaques. Animals are grouped as Rare, Discoverable and Legendary, and you can study and log them.
Weather is local, so a storm can hit one part of the map while another stays sunny. Puddles stay after rain, rainbows can appear, a new wind system moves hair, debris, water and swamp grass, and tropical storms and hurricanes are part of the game. See our Leonida map guide for the regions.
Story length
Rob Nelson told the New York Times that his own playthrough, finished in February 2026, took about 80 hours including optional goals with narrative consequences. That is one developer's run, not an official figure, and not a main-story-only time.
Microtransactions and generative AI
Asked directly by Kinda Funny, Nelson said there are no microtransactions and no generative AI in GTA 6's single-player game. Rockstar declined to discuss monetisation for any future online mode, and the game's ESRB listing does carry an In-Game Purchases notice, which most likely relates to online play. See online vs story mode.
Performance
Nelson said in August that the game was currently running at 30fps on console, and Rockstar has not promised a 60fps mode. Digital Foundry estimates the base PS5 renders at around 1440p internally before upscaling to 4K, with ray-traced reflections and global illumination. For the full breakdown by console, see PS5 vs Xbox for GTA 6.
FAQ
